Morocco photo diary: Fes

I left the group in Chefchaouen and traveled to Fes with my new German friend Kata. On the morning that we were planning to leave we were not yet sure if there was gonna be a bus or no, so, we just had to go to the bus station and wait. We went to the bus station the day before to ask about tickets and they told us to come back next day because "maybe there is a bus, maybe there isn´t". There indeed was a bus and it took 4-5 hours.

When we arrived in Fes we were aware that there was gonna be a lot of scammers there but we didn´t know they would try before we even got out of the taxi. Luckily we were smart enough to avoid all scammers but the first impression of Fes was not very welcoming. In the morning we went on a walking tour even though I usually avoid those and wander around instead but honestly we probably wouldn´t have found any of the places without the guide. It was really difficult to capture in photos how maze like the streets actually were. I loved it. Nobody tried to scam us once we settled. We just walked around aiming to get lost in the maze.

I only spent one night and one day in Fes before I continued my trip to Marrakech on an overnight train.

This blue town was definitely my favorite place in Morocco. It was much smaller in size compared to other cities I visited (Tanger, Fes, Marrakesh), less busy and the people were much friendlier. The mountain scenery was amazing. I could have staid here for 2 weeks if I had the time. From Tanger I took a shared taxi with other travelers who were going to the same direction. They take 6 travelers to each taxi. 2 on the front seat and 4 in the back. I would be lying if I said it wasn´t a long and hot ride sharing the back seat with 3 guys but apparently this is the best or only way to travel between these cities.

In total I spent 4 nights in Chefchaouen. You could wander around the pretty streets for ages. Shopping here was easier than in busier cities because the sellers weren´t as aggressive but then again the selection wasn´t as big. Apart from walking in the town we also went outside the town hiking to the mountains to find a place called God´s bridge and to the Spanish mosque along the side of the mountains and through the hash fields. Near God´s bridge I faced my fear of heights and jumped from a cliff. To a river. Apparently I´m not in a good enough shape to walk up and down the mountains. I´m also so clumsy that I´m surprised I even survived that hike alive. But it was so pretty in the mountains it was definitely worth it. In Chefchaouen I had my first Hamam experience. I went there early in the day and apart from me there was only the girl who scrubbed off a dozen layers of my skin. Hamam was weirdly not weird at all if it makes sense. And very relaxing.

I started my trip in Morocco from Tanger. The trip didn´t start so smoothly as both of my flights were late and instead of arriving in Tanger at 11pm it was already past 3am. On top of that the receptionist had decided to go to sleep instead of waiting for me as they promised when I called the hostel earlier. So, instead of having the receptionist pick me up from the parking lot they told me to take a taxi to, I followed a helpful old man through the dark medina and probably woke up a lot of people by ringing the doorbell half a dozen times until someone let me in the hostel. Still not the receptionist. The receptionist was nowhere to be found so I decided it´s better I just find an empty bed and deal with the check-in in the morning.

I left on this trip by myself but in the end I didn´t spend much time on my own as there are a lot of solo travelers and backpackers travelling Morocco. I found new friends the first morning in the hostel. In Tanger we did a lot of walking around the medina, went to the beach, ate fresh seafood at the harbour and visited a palace. I only booked 2 nights in Tanger but I feel there probably was more worth seeing there.
